RIVERVIEW (GNB) -- The official opening of the Rebecca Avenue Playground in Riverview took place today.

"I am so glad to see our government partner with The Town of Riverview in this important community infrastructure project," said Economic Development Minister Bruce Fitch. “Our investments in the Rebecca Avenue Playground will‎ allow our children and grandchildren to lead healthier lifestyles."

Fitch joined Riverview Mayor Ann Seamans and members of Riverview Town Council for a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“Natural playgrounds are a growing trend across North America and I am happy to see one take root in Riverview,” said Seamans. “It was an idea that developed through conversations with the community about how we can challenge and stimulate children through nature. Residents clearly place a high value on nature in our urban landscape so I expect more of these elements will be added to our playgrounds in the future.”

In March 2013, the town initiated a community consultation process to design a play area for the land on Rebecca Avenue. The result is a user-friendly space for children and youth of various ages and physical abilities to explore and connect with nature. Hillside slides, tunnels and wooden balance beams mix with traditional playground equipment to encourage imaginative play. The playground also offers accessible swings, a gazebo for shade and a pavement pad for spontaneous recreation and sports. Land on the site has been set aside for future use as a community garden.

The provincial government provided $74,000 towards the project through the Regional Development Corporation.
