FREDERICTON (GNB) - The provincial government is contributing $50,000 towards a community development infrastructure project in Fredericton.

“Investing in projects such as the Fredericton Loyalists Rugby Club facility promotes a healthy lifestyle which is a key element of our government’s plan,” said Justice Minister Troy Lifford. “This facility infrastructure project will support an important part of daily life in the Fredericton region, and this investment will improve the quality of life for families and residents.”

Lifford spoke on behalf of Natural Resources Minister Paul Robichaud, who is also the minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

“With three main user groups, as well as numerous special events, our facility use is maximized on a daily basis,” said Alison Aiton, president of the Fredericton Loyalists Rugby Club.  “This much-needed expansion will allow us to host larger-scale local, national and international tournaments and competitions so that we can continue to grow rugby, cricket and beach volleyball for the enjoyment of players all across the greater Fredericton region.”

The project consists of three phases, including the addition of changing rooms, field enhancements, and building public washrooms on the viewing side of the field.

The investment was made possible through the Regional Development Corporation’s Family and Youth Capital Assistance Program, which enables community groups, non-profit organizations, local service districts, and municipalities to obtain funding for youth and family-related projects such as playgrounds, sports or recreational facilities, community centres, and community equipment.
