MONCTON (GNB) – The provincial government will invest up to $23.85 million in support of the City of Moncton’s strategic priority infrastructure projects, to allow the construction of a new downtown entertainment centre.

“This new centre will mean Moncton is able to continue to attract big-ticket entertainers year-round,” said Economic Development Minister Bruce Fitch. “It will allow the city to build on its reputation as the entertainment capital of the Maritimes, and stimulate growth and revitalization in the downtown.”

Fitch spoke on behalf of Natural Resources Minister Paul Robichaud, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

"Our contribution means the city now has the increased fiscal capacity it needs to invest in important projects like this new centre," Fitch said. "This has been a priority for all three levels of government for many years, and I am so pleased to see it coming to fruition.”

The new downtown entertainment centre will include a concert venue, meeting space and an NHL-size rink. The development will also include outdoor public spaces to host a variety of entertainment, cultural and community events.

Construction of the centre is expected to result in more than 700 jobs. About 50 jobs are expected to be created once the facility is fully operational.
