CAMPBELLTON (GNB) – Campbellton and area residents will benefit from enhanced social, recreational and community services courtesy of an investment of more than $300,000 in a new YMCA facility.

“Helping families is one of our government’s priorities,” said Energy and Mines Minister Donald Arseneault. “We want our province to be the best place to raise a family and we need to provide facilities such as the YMCA Youth Centre so families can thrive in Campbellton, Restigouche County and throughout New Brunswick.”

Arseneault made the announcement on behalf of Health Minister Victor Boudreau, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

“On behalf of city council and myself I want to take this opportunity to thank YMCA Moncton, the board of directors and their CEO Zane Korytko for making this YMCA possible,” said Campbellton Mayor Bruce MacIntosh. “We would also like to thank the Regional Development Corporation, other organizations for their financial contributions and a special thank you to Les Filles de Marie de l’Assomption.”

Funding provided through the Regional Development Corporation was used to purchase equipment as well as to transform a portion of the space at the Campbellton Memorial Regional Civic Centre into a YMCA Youth Centre.

“The YMCA Campbellton’s Youth Centre will be open to those aged 12 to 17 and will consist of a ‘hang out’ area with new furniture, gaming stations, music room, computer lab, pool table, ping pong table, TVs, and many more items to ensure a safe and socially-conducive atmosphere for teens,” said May Nazair, manager for the centre. “The centre will be a great place for youth from across the Restigouche region to go to for many different activities and programs that will be offered in both official languages. We are making a point of ensuring that those activities and programs are ones that youth in the area really want by surveying students at area high schools.”

The Youth Centre is modelled after the YMCA of Greater Moncton’s youth ‘drop-in zone,’ with the initiative being supported by the Greater Moncton YMCA.
