SAINT JOHN (GNB) – The provincial government is investing $235,000 in the Imperial Theatre restoration project in Saint John.

“We understand how important creating jobs and growing the economy are to New Brunswickers and their families,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “This investment demonstrates our commitment to getting things done by creating economic opportunities through shaping the future of this culturally rich performing arts facility.”

The Regional Development Corporation will contribute $200,000 towards the project.  In addition, the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture’s Built Heritage program will provide $35,000. The funding will be used for restoring the historical building’s exterior.

“We are thrilled that the provincial government recognizes the Imperial Theatre as an important piece of social infrastructure in our region,” said Lee Bolton, executive director of the theatre. “With this assistance, we will be able to continue our mission to enrich, engage and inspire our community through the performing arts for many years to come.”

The building is more than 100 years old and has been used in the past as a vaudeville theatre, a cinema, a church, and more recently as performing arts centre. Economic spin-offs contribute an estimated $3.6 million into the local restaurant, accommodation and tourism sectors.
