MONCTON (GNB) – The provincial government is investing $750,000 in the construction of a new turf field next to Moncton High School.

“This field will be an important asset to the entire community as it will be used to promote healthy living for residents, students and families and host school and other important sporting events,” said Moncton East MLA Monique LeBlanc.

LeBlanc attended for Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser, who is also the minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

Design and engineering work on the $2-million project will begin this year, with the field to be completed in 2019.

“In our climate, artificial turf fields see much more play for youth,” said Moncton Mayor Dawn Arnold. “We see them in use earlier and later in the season, and they are much less affected by rain. Also, the addition of yet another turf field in the city of Moncton makes us even more competitive in attracting sporting events.”

The provincial government’s contribution is a combined investment through the Regional Development Corporation and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. The Moncton High School field committee is investing $500,000 in the project. The City of Moncton’s proposed contribution of $750,000 has been earmarked in the 2019 capital budget and will be voted on this fall.
