MIRAMICHI (GNB) – Miramichi Transit received four new buses thanks in part to federal and provincial funding.

“This is an example of the federal government working in partnership with New Brunswick to support and strengthen communities across the province, including Miramichi,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser, who is also the minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “Our government is committed to making possible new transit options and infrastructure that is aligned with our goals of promoting economic activity and creating jobs.”

Three 24-seat buses and one 14-seat bus are set to begin service as part of the Miramichi Transit revitalization project. The federal government contributed $152,146 through the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund.

“The Government of Canada is working closely with its provincial and municipal partners to make strategic infrastructure investments that support middle-class jobs and economic growth,” said Miramichi-Grand Lake MP Pat Finnigan. “Helping Canadians get to and from their daily activities quickly and easily is essential to creating strong communities. These new buses will provide Miramichi residents with improved transit services, get more cars off the road, and make our city more environmentally sustainable.”

Finnigan attended for federal Infrastructure and Communities Minister Amarjeet Sohi.

“The City of Miramichi is proud to be a partner in ensuring transit service is available in our community,” said Miramichi Mayor Adam Lordon. “Transit is a vital part of life and mobility for many of our citizens. With the shared purchase of these four new buses, we can now say we have one of the newest transit fleets in the country and would encourage all Miramichiers to consider Miramichi Transit as a transportation option.”

“By adding new buses to our fleet, we increase reliability and improve our capacity to serve the citizens of Miramichi,” said James Mallory, general manager of Miramichi Transit. “This investment by the city, province and federal government shows their continued commitment towards public transportation.”

Miramichi Transit has been operating since 2009, serving a population of more than 17,000. Its ridership averages 50,000 passengers per year. The service runs three bus routes Monday through Saturday, with more than 100 stops every hour within city limits.
