DIEPPE (GNB) – Sixty-eight new units for low-income seniors and people with disabilities were officially opened today at 135 Gould St., Dieppe.

“Adequate, accessible and affordable housing is a significant factor in helping to enhance the quality of life of New Brunswickers and their families,” said Social Development Minister Sue Stultz, who is also minister responsible for seniors, housing and community non-profit organizations. “Projects such as this one are good examples of how governments and the community can work together to rebuild New Brunswick.”

The development was established by Domaine Centre-Ville Dieppe Inc. and built at a cost of more than $6.7 million. The project received $960,000 in federal stimulus funding to offset construction costs and more than $1.9 million in rent supplements from the provincial government for 24 units.

“The Government of Canada is providing a hand-up to those who need it most here in Dieppe and in all corners of the country,” said Robert Goguen, MP for Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe. “We are pleased that the federal investment of more than $960,000 has helped to provide 24 units of affordable housing for low-income seniors and people with disabilities in this community.”

Goguen attended the opening on behalf of Diane Finley, minister of human resources and skills development and minister responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

Funding was made available through Canada's Economic Action Plan. The provincial and federal governments contribute equally to the overall investment of $75 million under the amended Canada-New Brunswick Affordable Housing Program Agreement.

The project was built to high energy-efficiency standards and involved consultation with Efficiency NB. Builders of multi-unit residential buildings can receive technical support from Efficiency NB on how to meet energy efficiency targets.
