BATHURST (GNB) – Residents and community members joined provincial representatives today to celebrate the official opening of an addition to Le Foyer Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, in Bathurst. The $7.9-million project adds 30 beds, for a total of 130.

"Providing seniors with quality care and opportunities to continue contributing to the communities they built is a key part of our government's plan to rebuild New Brunswick," said Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé. "The addition to Le Foyer Notre-Dame-de- Lourdes provides more seniors with an enhanced quality of life in their community."

During the three-step review process that led to the 2011-2016 Nursing Home Renovation and Replacement Plan, $1.1 million in savings was found from the original project estimate of $9 million under the 2009 nursing home plan.

The addition has 30 private rooms; a rehabilitation services office; a satellite kitchen; dining, living and family rooms; and service areas.

"Le Foyer Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes is a wonderful asset to the area of Bathurst," said Dubé. "Having this addition to the current facility in the community enables more seniors to have access to the care and support they need close to home, family and friends."

To help alleviate hospital congestion in the Bathurst region, all 30 beds are occupied by seniors who were waiting in the hospital for a nursing home bed.

Le Foyer Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes project is part of the provincial government's 2011-16 Nursing Home Renovation and Replacement Plan, under which 354 nursing home beds and 704 specialized care beds are being created.
