FREDERICTON (GNB) – In celebration of Nursing Home Week, June 1-7, Social Development Minister Cathy Rogers is encouraging New Brunswickers to visit one of the many nursing homes hosting special events throughout the week.

“One of our commitments was to help make the transition to nursing home care easier through organized day visits to nursing homes for interested seniors,” said Rogers. “I applaud the efforts of the New Brunswick Association of Nursing Homes and its members for organizing special events to encourage seniors and their families to visit nursing homes in their communities.”

There are 65 nursing homes throughout New Brunswick caring for about 4,400 residents.

“The week is an opportunity to recognize the important work that is done each day in nursing homes across the province,” said Rogers. “As a government, we value and respect the hard work and dedication of the administrators, staff, boards of directors and the many volunteers that provide care and services to residents in nursing homes.”

In addition to Nursing Home Week, Rogers also proclaimed June 1 as Intergenerational Day.

“Nursing homes are one place where there is much intergenerational activity,” said Rogers. “There are many examples across the province of nursing homes that have built strong ties with schools and youth organizations. Students, for example, have done a number of interesting projects with residents such as researching and loading music onto iPods for them or recording their life stories.”

New Brunswick is one of seven provinces and territories which observe this day to promote and celebrate the benefits of positive connections and benefits between generations.
