MONCTON (GNB) – Five new affordable housing units for low-income families and persons with disabilities were officially opened today in Moncton.

“Our government’s priorities are job creation, and making this province the best place to live, work, and raise a family for all New Brunswickers,” said Social Development Minister Cathy Rogers. “Taking part in this important program, moves New Brunswick forward by creating a province where every individual and family is accepted, included, and valued.”

The development, at 65 Purdy Ave., received more than $420,000 in rent supplements from the provincial government. The federal government contributed $200,000. First Choice Apartments Inc. developed the overall project of nine units.

“This is an exciting day for the community and I am delighted to be part of it,” said Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Robert Goguen. “The federal government’s investment in Moncton is helping to provide an energy-efficient and affordable place for families and persons with disabilities to call home.”

Goguen attended the announcement for Candice Bergen, minister of state for social development.

Funding was made available as a result of the $47 million Investment in Affordable Housing 2011-2014 Agreement between the federal and provincial governments. Under the agreement, the province will use the funds for new construction projects and rent subsidies.
