SAINT JOHN (GNB) – Construction is underway on a 62-unit housing development in Saint John. The project will include 36 affordable housing units for low-income seniors and persons with disabilities.

“Making life easier and more affordable for all New Brunswickers is one of our government’s top priorities,” said Government Services Minister Ed Doherty. “By participating in this partnership among governments, businesses, communities and non-profit organizations, we all help move the province forward.”

Doherty spoke on behalf of Social Development Minister Cathy Rogers.

The development, at 190 Churchill Blvd., is being built by Vimy Estates Inc.

“The federal government is helping to make affordable housing available in New Brunswick and across Canada,” said Saint John MP Rodney Weston. “These new units will help seniors and persons with disabilities access affordable rental housing that meets their needs, and remain close to their family and friends in the community.”

Weston attended the announcement for Candice Bergen, minister of state for social development.

This project will receive a combined total of $1,440,000 in federal funding as well as more than $2.9 million in rent supplements from the provincial government.

This comes as a result of the $78 million Investment in Affordable housing 2014-2019 Extension Agreement between the Government of Canada and New Brunswick.

Additional funding was provided through Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The provincial and federal governments contributed equally to an overall investment of $75 million under the amended Canada-New Brunswick Affordable Housing Program Agreement.
