SAINT JOHN (GNB) – The provincial government announced today that Safe Harbour Transitional Youth Services, an emergency or short-term transitional housing facility for young people who are at risk, will reopen in March 2017.

It will be operated by Partners for Youth, an organization dedicated to helping young people who are facing challenges.

“Your government is committed to investing in the needs of youth who are at risk  in New Brunswick,” said Families and Children Minister Stephen Horsman. “Safe Harbour will provide the right services to support them as they transition into safe and autonomous living.”

Safe Harbour aims to increase stability for youth by removing the need for them to live on the streets or “couch-surf”, by providing them with a safe home.

The facility closed in January due to financial struggles, which have since been resolved with assistance from the Anglican Diocese of Fredericton and the Department of Social Development.

The 10-bed facility, located in the Saint John city centre, will provide its residents with programs to help them develop the skills they need to live independently. Residents are able to stay at the facility for a short time, or for longer terms of up to six months. Staff members are available to the residents 24 hours a day.
