MIRAMICHI (GNB) – Details of a nursing home project in Miramichi were released today during a public information session.

Shannex RLC Ltd. will build a 159-bed nursing home on Water Street near the Miramichi Regional Hospital. A second complex, to be constructed on King George Highway in Douglastown, will feature 81 nursing home beds, as well as other housing options for people with different care needs.

“We have needed a new nursing home in Miramichi for years,’’ said Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Lisa Harris. “I am so pleased to know the project is moving forward and seniors here will have a state-of-the-art facility.”

Last month, Shannex was awarded the contract to provide 240 new nursing home beds. The new facilities will replace the Miramichi Senior Citizens Home and Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home.

“I know the seniors of Miramichi and their families will benefit from this new and modern nursing home project for years to come,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “Construction at the two sites is also going to be a boon for the economy of the region.”

The project is scheduled to be completed in late 2019 or early 2020.

“We are pleased and excited to share our vision for the new nursing homes with the community,” said Jason Shannon, president and chief operating officer of Shannex. “We have a long history of developing trusted partnerships in the areas where we operate, and we look forward to becoming part of the community here in Miramichi.”

Fostering healthy aging and support for seniors is one of the seven priority areas outlined in the New Brunswick Family Plan framework, which also focuses government action on: improving access to primary and acute care; promoting wellness; supporting people with addictions and mental health challenges; advancing women’s equality; reducing poverty and providing support for persons living with a disability.
