TRACADIE (GNB) – A transition house for women and children in the Tracadie region will be renovated and a new second-stage housing facility will be constructed, thanks in part to an investment of more than $1.3 million from the provincial and federal governments.

Accueil Sainte-Famille, a non-profit organization that helps victims of family violence, will receive $591,000 to renovate its existing 10-bed transition house.

The organization will also receive $240,000 to build a six-unit second-stage housing facility, along with $545,000 in rent supplements. Second-stage housing provides safe housing and community services to help women and their families become more independent.

“It is important to ensure women and children have a support system in place to help them through extremely difficult and stressful situations,” said Tracadie-Sheila MLA Serge Rousselle. “These projects demonstrate how the provincial and federal governments are working together to help victims of family violence begin new chapters in their lives.”

Rousselle attended for Families and Children Minister Stephen Horsman.

“Our government is providing Canadians not only with safe, affordable housing, but is also working hard to strengthen our communities,” said Acadie-Bathurst MP Serge Cormier. “These new investments are another example of our government’s commitment toward ensuring that survivors of domestic violence are able to enjoy a safe and stable environment.”

The funding comes from two cost-shared agreements between the federal and provincial governments: the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation-New Brunswick Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement and the Social Infrastructure Funds Agreement.
