FREDERICTON (CNB) - Three young New Brunswick artists have been chosen to represent the province as members of the National Artists Program at the 2009 Canada Summer Games.

Brandon Hunter, Jessika Aubé and Kristen Atkins will join Team New Brunswick for the program, which is part of the 2009 Canada Summer Games from Aug. 15-29 in Charlottetown and Summerside, Prince Edward Island.

"The Canada Summer Games present an opportunity to celebrate excellence in both athletics and arts," said Wellness, Culture and Sport Minister Hédard Albert. "We look forward to including these three talented young artists as important and integral members of Team New Brunswick. The National Artists Program participants bring a unique dimension to the overall team, and we welcome their involvement."

The artists were selected by an evaluation committee of members of New Brunswick's arts community. They will join young artists from all parts of Canada for an interdisciplinary mentorship program in the arts during the two weeks of the games.

Brandon, of Orange Hill, is a Grade 12 student at Simonds High School in Saint John. He will represent the visual arts. A previous participant in Mount Allison University's Visual Arts Camp, he has been recognized for his commitment and talent in sculpture, painting and drawing. This year he has undertaken independent studies in the visual arts to better prepare him for further education in the arts.

Jessika, of Beresford, is a Grade 12 student at École secondaire Népisiguit in Bathurst. She will be the musical arts representative. In addition to composing music, she sings and plays the violin, guitar and flute. She has participated in more than 250 music competitions and performances in New Brunswick and Quebec during the past six years. Her commitment to music is also demonstrated by her participation in school and community choral groups and choirs.

Atkins, of Moncton, is a third-year student in fine arts at Mount Allison University. She, also, will represent the visual arts. Her commitment and skills in the fine arts, particularly in sculpture, drawing and painting, is reflected in academic achievement at Mount Allison. An experienced team player, she is a member of the university women's basketball team, and is a volunteer coach for youth basketball.
