FREDERICTON (CNB) – Kevin Heppell has been chosen to carry the provincial flag and lead Team New Brunswick into the Feb. 11 opening ceremonies of the Canada Games.

"I congratulate Kevin on this well-deserved achievement," said Premier David Alward. "I am sure he will serve as a great ambassador for his team and for the province. I, along with all New Brunswickers, look forward to seeing him carry our flag in Halifax."

Heppell, from Charlo, is a member of the biathlon team. This will be his second time competing in the Canada Games. He has achieved several top 10 finishes in national events, and was named the 2010 athlete of the year at École Aux Quatre Vents.

Heppell was nominated because of his positive attitude, compassion, and natural sense of leadership.

Wellness, Culture and Sport Minister Trevor Holder will attend the opening ceremonies.

New Brunswick is sending 165 athletes, three artists, 45 coaches, 17 managers, six support personnel and 17 mission staff to the Canada Games, which run Feb. 11-27.
