HALIFAX (CNB) – Kevin Heppell, from Charlo, was the first New Brunswick athlete to enter the Metro centre in Halifax on Friday evening for the official opening ceremonies of the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax.

Heppell, a biathlete, was leading the 150-member strong New Brunswick delegation at the ceremonies.  Competitions begin today, Saturday, with long course speed skating at the Halifax Commons, ringette and men’s hockey.

“It was an honour for me to be the flagbearer for New Brunswick,” said Heppell following the ceremony. “I was a bit nervous before going into the rink, but when I saw all those people standing and cheering, it was exciting and got my mind off the role. It was a great feeling. My big smile said everything.”

Premier David Alward and Wellness, Culture and Sport Minister Trevor Holder took the salute of Team New Brunswick at the opening ceremonies. Alward was a strong supporter of Team New Brunswick meeting members of the team during the procession at the ceremonies.
