HALIFAX (CNB) – Vanessa St-Pierre won Team New Brunswick’s first gold medal in judo competitions Wednesday at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax.

St-Pierre beat Briana McCracken of Ontario on points in the 48-52 kg category to win the gold. Karine LeBreton got the silver medal in the 52-57 kg category by losing to Nicole Jenicek of Ontario in the final. Lukas Novak (-60kg) and Marcus Mason (60-66kg) won bronze to give New Brunswick a count of 10 medals up to date.

“I am very happy to have won New Brunswick’s first gold medal,” said St-Pierre. “It was my objective to win gold. The bout was hard, and I was tired at the end, but I kept going.”
