SHERBROOKE, Que. (GNB) – Fredericton swimmer Cassidy Richards will be Team New Brunswick’s flag bearer for the official opening ceremonies of the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Quebec on Friday at 8 p.m. Atlantic time.

“It is an honour,” said Richards. “I am really excited to be the flag bearer for New Brunswick.”

Team New Brunswick chef-de-mission Stephane Hachey made the announcement during a pep rally in Sherbrooke. Premier David Alward and  Healthy and Inclusive Communities Minister Dorothy Shephard joined the athletes, coaches, managers and members of Team New Brunswick mission staff.

Richards, 16, a member of the Fredericton Aquanauts Swim Team (FAST) and a Grade 11 student at Fredericton High School, will lead the New Brunswick delegation into the Stade de l’Université de Sherbrooke.

Following the Canada Summer Games, Richards will join Team Canada for the 2013 FINA world junior swimming championships to be held Aug. 26-31 in Dubai. Richards qualified for the national team following her performance at the Canadian nationals held last month in Montreal.
