SHERBROOKE, Que. (GNB) – Team NB ended the first week of competition at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que., with four medals and several new provincial records.

“We challenged our athletes to be game changers and they answered the call,” said Stephane Hachey, Team NB’s chef-de-mission. “Across the different sports, we saw great performances.”

New Brunswick earned all four of its first-week medals on Thursday in sailing and wrestling. Sailor Fraser Wells of Rothesay and wrestler Elizabeth "Bee" Fagan of Oromocto both struck gold in their respective events. Bailey Theriault of Rexton and Shalina Mason of St. Stephen wrestled their ways to respective bronze medals.

Team NB came close to earning a medal in the men’s basketball bronze-medal final but fell short, losing 65-57 to host Quebec.

The men’s baseball team also had an opportunity to earn bronze Friday but could not strike up any offence to Alberta in Friday’s afternoon bronze medal. Alberta blanked Team NB 7-0.

Women’s softball finished in sixth place, losing 4-0 to Saskatchewan. Heavy rains forced the teams to agree to call the game in the fourth inning.

Team NB’s swim team ended its competition in the 5,000-metre open swim in Lac Memprhemagog Friday morning. Gabriel Boivin of Moncton finished 11th, and teammate Fredericton’s David Thibodeau placed 16th in the men’s competition. Kelsey Vessey of Fredericton was the women’s top New Brunswick swimmer, placing 11th and Mary Ketterling of Fredericton coming in 14th. The swim team set 10 new provincial records in the pool during the Canada Summer Games.

Team NB’s first-week athletes departed Sherbrooke on Friday night for New Brunswick. Second-week participants are slated to arrive Saturday evening.

Fencing, beach volleyball, canoe-kayak, road cycling, athletics and women’s volleyball start their respective competitions Monday. Rowing, triathlon and men’s soccer commence Tuesday with golf starting Wednesday.
