FREDERICTON (GNB) – Eleven regional heritage fairs are taking place throughout New Brunswick in April and May.

“Heritage fairs give our young people an opportunity to learn about their heritage and share our stories with others,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Trevor Holder. “The program also provides an avenue for extending the reach of our heritage resources to those who will be our future leaders. I encourage all New Brunswickers to attend the regional heritage fair in their area, to learn from our young people about our history, and to enjoy celebrating our way of life.”

From a total of 138 participating schools, students will come together at regional heritage fair sites to present hands-on, multi-media presentations on Canadian people, legends, milestones and achievements.

“The heritage fairs provide a unique opportunity for students to reflect on and learn more about the rich cultural heritage and achievements of our communities and our province,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Marie-Claude Blais. “As the 2014 theme, New Brunswick Remembers (1914-2014), reminds us, it is important to remember the sacrifices made. I invite all residents to take advantage of the fairs in their area to discover how previous generations built our province through their strength and determination.”

The fairs are intended to provide an innovative learning opportunity for social studies students wishing to study their provincial and national history. At these events, students are recognized by New Brunswick's heritage community for their contributions to learning about the past.
In addition, one student project will be selected at each regional fair to represent his or her school district at the provincial showcase, taking place June 20 - 22 at the Musée historique du Madawaska in Edmundston.
