FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government’s base operational funding to the Beaverbrook Art Gallery will be more than doubled starting this year, going to $575,000  from the previous amount of $275,000 a year.

The new funding was announced June 26 during an exhibition opening held at the gallery.

“The Beaverbrook Art Gallery is our provincial art gallery and as such, we have to ensure the proper funding is provided to ensure they can deliver on their mandate to showcase New Brunswick art in addition to the gallery’s world class collection”, said Energy and Mines Minister Craig Leonard.

Leonard made the announcement on behalf of Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Trevor Holder.

As part of the renewed cultural policy Creative Futures, the provincial government has designated $1.3 million as additional operating funding for key cultural institutions.

Creative Futures is the result of a multi-year policy renewal process that focused on the four areas of action identified in the 2002 policy:

  • culture’s role in our everyday lives, including education, access to culture and cultural awareness;
  • the role of artists, arts organizations and arts infrastructure in creating a vibrant cultural sector;
  • conserving our collective heritage and ensuring quality design and planning; and
  • the role of culture in economic development.

The Key Cultural Institutions component of the policy serves to give recognition of the importance of the respective mandates of these entities to preserve and promote culture while acting as major cultural tourism attractions.

 “The gallery is ready to move forward with its capital campaign along with new programming and educational opportunities,” said Leonard. “Our government is pleased to assist the gallery with this funding so that New Brunswickers can continue to enjoy all that the Beaverbrook Art Gallery offers.”
