MIRAMICHI (GNB) – The New Brunswick Day celebrations are starting early this year in recognition of Canada 150. The province will host an early celebration in Miramichi on Saturday, July 22.

“The celebration in Miramichi will be a wonderful occasion to showcase our beautiful region,” said Minister of Seniors and Long-term Care Lisa Harris. “We hope that people from across our province and beyond will join us to celebrate New Brunswick.”

Harris spoke on behalf of Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister John Ames.

To observe the 150th anniversary of Confederation, the government will kick-off a seven-week celebration in counties across New Brunswick on Canada Day. In the coming weeks, the government will unveil the initiatives it has planned to celebrate Canada 150 this summer.

Located along the world-famous salmon-fishing river, the City of Miramichi offers cultural experiences including Canada’s Irish Festival on the Miramichi and the Miramichi Folksong Festival. The city is home to the Boishébert and Beaubears Island Shipbuilding National Historic Site.

“We encourage New Brunswickers to join together in Miramichi this summer to celebrate all that it means to be ‘NB Proud’,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “I am thrilled that residents from Miramichi and beyond will get to experience all that our region has to offer during this special year.”

The early New Brunswick Day celebration will take place during Canada’s Irish Festival on the Miramichi, happening July 20-23.

"The Irish Festival is a great way to celebrate our rich Celtic history in New Brunswick,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “Like so many New Brunswickers, we look forward to this celebration this summer."

“The City of Miramichi is very excited to take part in this special announcement,” said Miramichi Mayor Adam Lordon. “We look forward to being an active partner in putting together yet another exciting event that will honour Miramichi's rich history, arts, and cultures as we celebrate Canada 150 locally, provincially and nationally all summer long!”

New Brunswick Day has been celebrated since 1976. An official host community has been chosen since 1990. The City of Edmundston will host the province’s official 2017 New Brunswick Day celebrations on Monday, Aug. 7.
