MONCTON (GNB) – Getting away is closer than you think, according to a new provincial tourism “staycation” campaign launched today.

“New Brunswickers want us to focus on job creation and economic growth, and that is why the tourism industry plays an important role in our government’s economic vision,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister John Ames. “The government is working with industry to make New Brunswick a top tourism destination for both visitors and residents with innovative tourism products that offer unique and authentic experiences. We invite everyone to explore what our province has to offer.”

The campaign aims to remind New Brunswickers of the many experiences the province has to offer, from day trips to longer getaways, for all ages and interests. The tourism website features hundreds of experiences, including whale watching, zip lining, cultural events, food, fishing, and kayaking.

“We will continue to promote New Brunswick as a world-class travel destination to both visitors and residents because we recognize how important tourism is to our economy and our communities,” said Ames.

The staycation campaign is the second initiative from the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture aimed at New Brunswickers. Earlier this year, the department launched Sticky Season, a campaign that paired the province’s traditional maple syrup sugar bush experiences with the growing craft beer industry.

In the New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan, the provincial government identifies tourism as one of 12 growth opportunities. The tourism industry employs more than 42,000 people in New Brunswick. In 2015, for every public dollar spent on marketing the province, there was a return of $3.19 that can be reinvested in social programs.
