EDMONTON (GNB) – Canada’s premiers will hold their next summer meeting in New Brunswick.

They will meet in Saint Andrews July 18-20, 2018, to discuss issues of mutual concern and continue their efforts to work together to strengthen the Canadian federation.

“It is an honour for me to host the 2018 summer meeting of Canada’s premiers,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “These meetings have shown Canadians how their governments are working to support families and ensure continued economic growth.

“This is an opportunity to welcome all Canadians to our beautiful province and one of our most scenic and historic communities.”

The Council of the Federation was created in 2003 to promote provincial-territorial co-operation and closer ties among members; to foster meaningful relations among governments based on respect for the Constitution and recognition of diversity within the federation; and to show leadership in issues important to all Canadians. The council meets annually.

“It is fitting to host all the premiers in Canada’s number one tourist destination of Saint Andrews,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister John Ames. “Tourism is a major component of our government’s economic vision and a key opportunity for growth in our Economic Growth Plan. We welcome the opportunity to have all eyes on us and to share our beautiful town, our spectacular Bay of Fundy and, of course, the history of Ministers Island and its connection to Confederation.”

Up to 200 people are expected to travel to Saint Andrews for the conference. New Brunswick last hosted the Council of the Federation in August 2007, when the premiers met in Moncton.
