WINNIPEG (GNB) – Team New Brunswick won three medals today at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg.

Laura Dickinson, 18, of Miramichi, mined silver in the 3000 metre steeplechase while Liam Turgeon, of Tide Head, claimed bronze in the shot put and Christel Robichaud, of Moncton, won bronze in the female para discus.

“There were good conditions, not too hot,” said Dickinson. “It was really hot yesterday and I am glad we raced this evening.”

Dickinson returns to the track on Friday, for the 5000 metre race.

Earlier in the day on the track, Turgeon, 21, threw a personal best in the shot put event to win bronze. After claiming his medal this evening, Turgeon returned to competition, tossing in the hammer throw.

“Going in (the shot put), I knew that I was throwing well in practice and I had just had to transition it into competition,” said Turgeon.

Robichaud competed Monday night in the para female discus event but the final medal winners weren’t declared until today.

“It was not my greatest performance but I am very happy to get my medal,” said Robichaud. “My arm currently hurts and we shall see how my arm goes for Friday’s shot put event.”

On the water at Rabbit Lake in Kenora, Ontario, Team New Brunswick’s women’s four and women’s double scull will head to Final B on Thursday. Wednesday is a non-competition day for both the rowing and sailing teams.

The third day of racing in sailing saw the strongest winds of the competition to date. Winds started in the 10-12 knot range, before building to 20 knots. Sailors also faced big waves throughout the day. Claire Sears sits in third place in the women’s single handed laser radial. Annie Dysart and Lucie Ford are in fourth place in the double handed 29er female. Peter Young and Andrew Keyes occupy seventh spot in the double handed 29er male. John Brittain is in ninth spot in the single handed laser.

In basketball, the women’s squad lost a close one 71-68 to host Manitoba in the quarter-final match. They will play British Columbia Wednesday morning. The men’s team will play Nova Scotia in the afternoon after losing 76-71 to Ontario late tonight.

The men’s baseball team lost 7-3 to Nova Scotia and will play against Newfoundland and Labrador Thursday for 9th place in the standings. The men’s softball squad returns to the field Wednesday against Team Alberta

Team New Brunswick’s mountain bike trio of Anthony Arseneau, Rémi Levesque and Craig Marshall placed seventh in today’s relays at Bison Butte Mountain Bike Course.

In beach volleyball, the men’s squad will face either Prince Edward Island or Yukon in an evening placing match while the women’s team will play Saskatchewan then Prince Edward Island.

Triathlon, mountain bike, athletics, and baseball teams face training days Wednesday before returning to competition Thursday.
