FREDERICTON (GNB) – New Brunswickers are invited to join Lt.-Gov. Jocelyne Roy Vienneau in recognizing the upcoming centennial of the Battle of Vimy Ridge at a public commemoration and unveiling at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 9, on the grounds of Government House. A reception will follow.

During the First World War’s historic Battle of Vimy Ridge, four Canadian divisions – including New Brunswick’s 26th Battalion and 4th and 6th Siege Batteries of the Royal Canadian Artillery – seized an enemy position that had been considered impenetrable by both its German defenders and Canada’s allies. The battle paved the way for an Allied victory and solidified Canada’s status as an independent nation.

“Whether on the front lines or the home front, New Brunswickers played a significant role in the Battle of Vimy Ridge; one that ultimately led to an Allied victory and helped build the country we have today,” Roy Vienneau said. “I encourage New Brunswickers to join with me on April 9 to remember those who fought for us at Vimy Ridge, and recognize that legacy.”

Some Vimy-related effects will be on display inside. Government House was a military hospital 100 years ago, where soldiers injured in the First World War went to recover.

The Government House ceremony marks the beginning of a number of activities and events planned for this spring by the provincial government and the New Brunswick Museum.
