EDMUNDSTON (GNB) – More than $1.5 million in combined funding was announced by provincial and federal officials today for renovations to Centre Maillet, turning it into a multifunctional community centre offering community and cultural programming.

“Investments in community infrastructure and cultural spaces like Centre Maillet contribute to the overall well-being of residents as well as the economic growth in the region,” said Réjean Savoie, minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “This project is well aligned with our goal to build vibrant and sustainable communities as the foundation for a better New Brunswick.”

Funding will support renovations to maximize the potential of the facility and will enable organizations to offer renewed cultural and community programming.

“Édifice Maillet is an integral part of the history and vitality of our community,” said Madawaska-Restigouche MP René Arsenault. “I am pleased that this facility is receiving the necessary upgrades, which will allow it to continue to fulfill its mandate. I invite the people of the area to continue to take advantage of this space and the opportunities for learning, creation and gathering that it offers.”

Arsenault attended for federal Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages Minister Randy Boissonnault and for federal Rural Economic Development Minister Gudie Hutchings, who is also minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

The province is investing $450,000 in the renovation through the Regional Development Corporation, while the federal government is providing $1,150,000 through Canadian Heritage and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

“A place for creation, learning, sharing, discussion and mutual support, Centre Maillet is more than just a building,” said Michelle Sirois, president of the centre. “We are extremely grateful for the support offered by the provincial and federal governments to ensure the continuity of our projects, respond to the various needs in the region and contribute to the development of the community, arts and culture. Centre Maillet, a world to discover for generations to come.”
