FREDERICTON (GNB) – Residents are urged to prepare and stay informed as predictions for heavy wind gusts and rain beginning today could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is predicting 50 mm to 100 mm of rain between today and Wednesday, with higher amounts possible in some areas including southwestern parts of the province. Some flooding due to poor drainage is also possible.

New Brunswickers can take steps to protect their families and their properties including:

  • monitor local forecasts;
  • make sure gutters are clear and guiding water away from the home;
  • make sure catch basins near the home are clear;
  • if driving is necessary, adjust speed and route to match road conditions. Localized water pooling on roads and washouts are possible; and
  • have a 72-hour preparedness kit.

“A rainfall of 100 mm or more can overwhelm storm drains. Now is the time to make sure water will not pool around your home and foundation,” said Greg MacCallum, director of the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization. “People need to be prepared to sustain themselves and their families for a minimum of 72 hours.”
